My fellow drivers, there’s a war going on, and if we don’t step up our game, we’re going to lose BIG TIME! I recently had to give a rebuttal to some statements that were made by a law firm regarding truckers versus regular motorists. They made it seem as though regular motorists were innocent, and that truckers were monsters. Now I must say that this is not totally far fetched.
Here’s the deal. Some of the people who have been coming out of driving school leave a lot to be desired. In the wrong hands, 70,000 lbs of rig can be like giving a gun to a monkey. When 70,000 lbs of rig has an accident on the highway, it usually makes a mess. When this happens, we as truckers are all bundled together and judged collectively. We can’t break the stereotype if we don’t change our driving habits. As driving professionals, we are supposed to be setting an example for others to follow.
As a detective learns to ” process ” a room when he / she enters an establishment, so must we learn to process traffic when on the highway. In other words, look for whatever you see!
Everyday we can see from the billboards and other advertisements that some ruthless as well as “wreckless” law firms are sending the message that no matter who was at fault in a wreck with a truck, “We’ll get you paid! ”
We need to work with law enforcement to develop more programs to educate the public about the do’s and don’ts of sharing the road with big rigs, especially new drivers.
Let’s be alert to our surroundings, and courteous even to those who just don’t get it. It’s better to say “There you go ” than “There you lay “.
