It was the summer of 1989 in Eloy, Az. i was fueling at what used to be the old Union 76 truck stop. While i fueled, another driver in a “long nosed” Peter built pulled up to the fuel isle adjacent to me. He got out of his truck and came to the front, nodded a greeting to me, and proceeded to pull his hood over to check his engine and components.

What happened next, you just don’t see every day. As he pulled that all metal hood, it just kept coming over in what seemed like slow motion until it rested on top of him as he lay sprawling on the ground. As this hood was quite heavy, it took 3 of us to lift it off of him.after finding that the only thing hurt about the driver was his pride, we all must have split our sides with laughter!

Apparently, he had just gotten his truck back from a repair shop where he’d had major engine work done. As these things happen, the mechanics at shop neglected to re-attach the retainers that limit how far the hood may be opened. I don’t know much the repair shop may have had to compensate that driver for his inconvenience, but the look on his face as that hood lay on top of him was priceless!
