Another mainstay of Route 66 has ridden off into the sunset. This old truck stop used to be one of the hot spots of Tucumcari, Nm. It was a junction point for I-40, US 54, and US 66. Rain, sleet, snow, this was a shining port in the storm. An interesting fact about US highways is that most of the time they ran through the middle of town making that part of the highway Main Street USA. This was the heartbeat of the town. Most of the businesses fed from it.
Travelers passed through from all over, and made use of every resource that the town had to offer from fuel,to repairs, and even lodging.
You see, at the time, U.S. highways went with the land. Unfortunately, the Interstate, or freeway was developed for a different purpose. One to save miles, the other to save time. This meant going across the land, which meant that unless it was a principal city, it may have been bypassed with no spur leading into it. Consequently, this caused many thriving towns to wither, and sadly some to die. Always take lots of pictures and videos. Cherish your memories.
and as always, (snick) y’all keep in touch!
